Residential Smoke Detector Installation Program
Residents of the Town of Herkimer may qualify for this special program. If you qualify, members of EHFD will visit your home (when convenient for your family) to inspect your existing smoke detectors, help you replace the batteries, test your alarms, and replace outdated alarms. This program is provided free of charge thanks to our partnership with the American Red Cross

Residential Knox Box Key Safe System
The East Herkimer Fire Department is proud to offer the Knox Box Corporation’s residential line to its residents. The system consists of a key safe that is secured to the exterior of your residence that can only be accessed with a special key by the fire department. This system prevents unwanted damage to property by eliminating the need for emergency responders to break in in the event of a fire alarm or medical emergency. Residents can also leave medical information securely in the box for emergency responders. Town of Herkimer Open Burning Information
Town of Herkimer residents must obtain a permit from the Town Clerk anytime that they intend to burn brush. Permit applications are available at the Town Offices located at 114 N. Prospect Street in the Village of Herkimer. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation no longer permits the burning of leaves, trash, or rubbish therefore outlawing burn barrels and the like. Rabies Clinics
The Herkimer County Department of Public Health hosts several rabies vaccination clinics for pets throughout the county each year. The East Herkimer Fire Department serves as a host site for the clinic on several occasions.
