EHFD Responds To Working Structure Fire

In the early morning hours of Thursday July 12, 2012 the East Herkimer Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on McKennan Road. The occupant of the residence met firefighters outside and reported that he had also saved his cat. The fire was placed under control in approximately 30 minutes however the home was heavily damaged by heat, smoke, and water. EHFD was assisted at the scene by Mohawk, Frankfort, and Schuyler Fire Departments as well as MOVAC. Herkimer Fire Department established a fill site at a hydrant in the village. The Red Cross assisted the occupant of the residence and the East Herkimer Ladies Auxiliary provided hydration and refreshments for emergency responders.

The occupant reported that his smoke alarm woke him from a sound sleep, allowing him to escape safely. Please take the time to test your smoke alarms and make sure that you have one in each bedroom, outside of your sleeping area, and on each floor so that you will have adequate warning. Also practice your home escape plan with you family to make sure that you are prepared.
